Early January 2021 - A Hungarian seller offers on eBay an "Adolf Hitler watercolour Painting Rare !!!! Germany, WWII" for $800. It is the second fake Hitler to appear in short time on eBay - late December 2020 another one was offered.

The 'Hungarian Hitler' is another fake Hitler that doesn't resemble in anything any thought to be authentic Hitler watercolors, branding it as a fake, not even a forgery. The signature on it another one of the many fake Hitler signatures.

eBay policies

EBay has clear policies on the sale of artworks and objects with autographs/signatures. It has also a ban on the selling of Nazi propaganda objects - and the fake Hitlers can been as such too.

In our opinion the offering of this fake Hitler is a clear violation of all relevant eBay policies.

Ebay's selling art policy

Not allowed

Knowingly selling, exhibiting, trading, producing, or advertising any unauthorized copy or reproduction of any work of art.

Disclaiming knowledge of, or responsibility for, the authenticity or legality of an item that you describe as genuine.

Describing or marketing any item as genuine if you cannot provide reasonable evidence to prove its authenticity.

Knowingly participating in any way in the advertisement or sale of any work of art using any deceptive practices, including, but not limited to, false or misleading claims of the item's scarcity, value, provenance, condition or investment potential.

Ebay's Offensive materials policy

Listings that promote or glorify hatred, violence, or discrimination aren't allowed.

Items with racist, anti-Semitic, or otherwise demeaning portrayals, for example through caricatures or other exaggerated features, including figurines, cartoons, housewares, historical advertisements, and golliwogs.

Historical Holocaust-related and Nazi-related items, including reproductions.

Any item that is anti-Semitic or any item from after 1933 that bears a swastika.

Media identified as Nazi propaganda.

'Hitler' removed

We asked eBay what its policy is regarding the offering of alleged Hitler artworks. A spokesperson of eBay Corporate Communications answered: “We are reviewing and removing these listings, they are not allowed on our marketplace. Appreciate you bringing these to our attention.”

And indeed, shortly after we received this anwer the fake Hitler as well as other Hitleriana were removed from eBay.
