journalism The strange business of selling fakes, forgeries and other concoctions attributed to Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) and other Nazi criminals, inclusive the trade in some authentic material. Introduction In
the direct post war period there was very little
interest in objects or documents originating from or
belonging to high ranking Nazi's. In the mid 1950s
this started to change, even though the events on this
particular French auction suggest otherwise. Content Hitler auctioned in Paris [These objects were without any doubt authentic; the article originates from the German newspaper “Münchner Merkur”, reprinted in the Swiss newspaper “Die Tat”.]
Was it even symbolic that the auction took place in the venerable Rue de Richelieu? "Mon cher Monsieur, the frames are valuable to me," said the buyer, explaining. In our era of rationalization one no longer makes such gold-bristling wood filigree work. Handicrafts are way too expensive. The
Hitler painting did not have the honor of having its
own"performance". It belonged to a batch that
included two pictures of Wilhelm II and one of the
imperial family. "What memories," sighed an old man
when the auctioneer, as is his duty, asked: "How
much is offered?" He struggled to find a buyer. The
portrait of Hitler was painted in oil, but one of
the emperor's portraits was a large photograph. All
together yielded 40marks. A large “Reichsadler”
(imperial eagle) with a span of three meters, which
was auctioned for 470 marks due to the gilded wood,
                            attracted more interest.
