The Hitler Forgery Industry

1938 | Trade | Certificates of Authenticity

The strange business of selling fakes, forgeries and other concoctions attributed to Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) and other Nazi criminals.

Introduction

In the 1930's the Hitler forgery industry was in full swing. In 1933 Reinhold Hanisch was arrested in Vienna for the first time, on suspicion of forging Hitler watercolors. The case was dismissed, because of lack of evidence.  In 1936 followed his second arrest - he died, probably of natural causes, whilst in detention.

Meanwhile, in Nazi publications reproductions of alleged Hitler watercolors were published. Some of these were authentic, others  were very likely not made by Hitler, but by
ghost art painters employed by the Nazis. At the same time 'normal' forgers were active.

Hitler's watercolors,

VIENNA. January 25 – Described as artistically very poor and amateurish, several of Hitler's water-colors, which were painted before the war, when he was an unemployed house painter and decorator, have been purchased by an art dealer and sent to Berlin. Some of the pictures, which were bought under the instructions of an unnamed German, fetched £1,670 each.

Vienna - Two watercolours by Hitler found

"The Viennese press reports that two watercolour drawings by Adolf Hitler, which were thought to be lost until now, have been found in Vienna. They were created during Hitler's time in Vienna and depict Franziskanerplein and Michaelis Church. One watercolour is signed "A. H.", the other: "A Hitler." The watercolours were given as a gift to the district leader Bürckel.”

It is believed that Hitler only signed his works with “A. Hitler”. If this is correct, then the work signed “A.H.” is in all likelihood a forgery.

Hitlers auctioned in Nazi Germany.

1938 - In July 1938 the Hauptarchiv der NSDAP (NSDAP Main Archive) buys at least one alleged Hitler watercolor at the Munich based auction house Weinmüller. It is a work titled "Peterskirche, München" It is bought for 8000 Reichsmark.

Earlier, probably also in 1938, the HA-NSDAP bought two other alleged Hitlers at the same auctionhouse; the works "Asamkirche, München" and "Kleines Standesamt, München", for respectively 8000 and 6000 Reichsmark."

On the Van den Borg and Droog
List of lists these are probably:

M15a - "Peterskirche", neg. 170/1a, Price 373
M17   - "Johanneskirche u. Asamhaus II", neg 170/1, Price 371(?)
M11   - "Kleines Standesamt", neg. 170/2, Price 393(?)

Unknown who the previous owner(s) was or were.

Take note: the acquisition of these works by the HA-NSDAP doesn't mean these works are authentic 'Hitlers'.

Hitlers from Hungary

“Watercolours by Hitler – In the Hungarian town of Szegedin, two watercolours were discovered that the Führer made in Vienna, 26 years ago. They bear the signature Adolf Hitler and were in the possession of an engineer, who acquired them in 1912 and has now made them available to the Party Museum in Munich.

Expensive Hitlers

The Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad, a newspaper based in the Dutch East Indies, reported in December 1938 on the sale of two alleged Hitlers in Germany earlier that year:

"A Good Money Investment?

Before Hitler took the fate of the German people into his hands, he was, as everyone knows, a painter. Some say one should actually call him a "house painter". But this is a detail of absolutely secondary importance that doesn't mean anything. Just as it doesn't mean anything that Mussolini was a schoolmaster and bricklayer during some periods of his eventful life, and not an inspector of education or an architect. Moreover, Hitler did paint, and anyone who doubts this can go to the Maison de la Culture in Paris, where at present two pictures are hanging of works bearing Hitler's signature. They are watercolours, and if we may believe the Intran [a French(?) press agency - DM], the subject of one of them is quite piquant, in the German sense of the word. This canvas was sold two months ago in Berlin for 15,000 Marks. The other came up for auction in Dresden on 15 April and fetched 38,000 Marks, which is a coquetry sum even for a canvas painted by a dictator.

An industrialist acquired it for his collection. And now the future will show whether or not it was a good investment, whereby the pictorial value of the watercolours may be of minor importance... But the buyer will not have been swayed by that either...."

Comment

Now, these two works cannot be traced in the remaining Hauptarchiv der NSDAP archives. The amounts are also considerably higher than wat was paid by the NSDAP Hauptarchiv for Hitlers at the time (max. 8,000 RM). The subject of one of the two works would have been "piquant" (in German ad Dutch this word has a sexual connotation). But no probably authentic work of Hitler can be called "piquant" in any way: all authentic Hitlers depict rather asexual buildings, with sometimes some very amateuristic painted figures in the foreground.

We have not (yet) been able to trace the original Intran article.
