Public domain The individuals whose names are mentioned frequently in articles and books on the letters to America from Margot and Anne Frank, which they sent to Betty Ann and Juanita Wagner, April 1940. Birdie Mathews (ca. 1880-1974) Otto Frank (1889-1980) Betty Ann Wagner (1925-2012) Margot Frank (1926-1945) Anne Frank (June 12, 1929- March 1945) Juanita Wagner (1929-2001) In 1940 Danville, a rural village near Burlington (Iowa, USA), had a population of 309 human souls. In 2016 this number had grown to 926, according to the United States Census Bureau. Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands had in 1940 a population of 800.594; in 2015 the number was 819.157, according to Amsterdam Conjunctuur) Provenance
Excerpts from 'Postmarked from Amsterdam. Anne Frank and her Iowa Pen Pal' by Shelby Myers-Verhage. Palimpsest [magazine]. State Historical Society of Iowa, winter 1995.¹ "As World War II loomed over Europe, an innovative Iowa educator [Birdie Mathews] was bringing the situation home to her students. One spring day in 1940 the seventh- and eight-grade teacher at the Danville Community School in Des Moines County offered her students the chance to correspond with pen pals overseas. One of her students, Juanita Wagner, drew the name of a ten year-old girl in the Netherlands—Anne Frank." (...) "Because pen-pal writing as a class room practice was still fairly rare at this time, only creative teachers such as Birdie Mathews would have set up situations in which their students cold learn firsthand about the world. Some Danville students wrote to other children in the United States, but many, including Juanita Wagner, chose to write to overseas pen pals. In her introductory letter in the spring of 1940, Juanita, age ten, wrote about Iowa, her mother (a teacher), sister Betty Ann, and life on their farm and in near by Danville. She sealed the letter and sent it to Anne Frank’s address in Amsterdam. In a few weeks Juanita received not one, but two overseas letters. Anne had written back to Juanita, and Anne’s sister Margot, age fourteen had written a letter to Betty Ann, Juanita’s fourteen-year old sister." (...) "The Frank sister’s letters from Amsterdam were dated April 27th and the 29th and were written in ink on light blue stationary. Anne and Margot had enclosed their school pictures. The letters were in English, but experts believe that the Frank sisters probably first composed their letters in Dutch and then copied them over in English after their father, Otto Frank, translated them." [in fact, it is unknown who translated the letters; other candidates are Mrs. Van der Möhlen, the teacher English of Margot Frank, or Margot, with the help of Mrs Van der Möhlen² - BfmD] Shelby Myers-Verhage: "The Wagner sisters anxiously awaited a second reply postmarked “Amsterdam.” But, no reply came. Although they did not know that the Frank family was Jewish and therefore in grave danger as the Third Reich advanced, Betty Ann did consider that mail might be restricted or censored. Wondering what had happened to their new Dutch pen pals, the Wagner sisters waited."
"Betty Ann established a nonprofit organization, the Wayfarer Ministries, which ships books to missionaries. It is to receive much of her share of the proceeds from the auction."(...) After the war was over, Betty Ann Wagner was teaching in a country school in eastern Illinois. Still curious about the Dutch pen pals, she wrote again to Anne’s address in Amsterdam. A few months later she received a long, handwritten letter from Otto Frank. He told about the family hiding, of Anne’s experiences in the “secret annex” and how Anne had died in a concentration camp. This was the first time Wagner learned that Anne had been Jewish: “When I received the letter I shed tears” Wagner recalled, “ and the next day took it with me to school and read Otto Frank’s letter to my students. I wanted them to realize how fortunate they were to be in America during World War II.” By 1956 Wagner had settled in California and was driving home from work one day when she heard a review on the radio of a Broadway play called The Diary of Anne Frank. Thinking it might be the same Anne Frank, she rushed to ordered a copy of the play. As soon as it arrived she realized it was indeed her sisters pen pal: a photo similar to the one from Anne appeared on the cover. Although Otto Frank’s letter had been misplaced during one of the Wagner family’s frequent moves, Betty Ann had carefully kept Anne and Margot’s letters safe. In the late 1980’s the letter became part of the collections of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, where they are now on display." Chicago Tribune, 22-07-1988.³ "The letters will be placed on display in the entrance lobby of the Wiesenthal Center’s new Beit Hashoah Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, which will open at the end of 1989. Jewish Telegraphic Agency, 27-10-1988.4 "The letters - still on display in our museum - are exact facsimiles of the originals, which are kept in a safe." Transcriptions of the letters and postcard can be found in 'Postmarked from Amsterdam. Anne Frank and her Iowa Pen Pal' by Shelby Myers-Verhage. Palimpsest [magazine]. State Historical Society of Iowa, winter 1995. Online on: http://www.traces.org/anne.html Authenticity "The unusual correspondence, verified by the director of the Anne Frank Center in Amsterdam, consists of two letters, a postcard, two passport-size photographs of the Jewish sisters" New York Times, 22-07-1988 In the Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool the legendary Henriette Boas (1911-2001) raised some questions about the authenticity of the letters, shortly after their existence was made public. These questions were answered the next day, as a former pupil from the Gemeentelijk Meisjeslyceum (Municipal Girls Lyceum), who had been a classmate of Margot Frank in 1940, stepped forward and declared that the sisters Frank had indeed written the letters. The English teacher they had in the second class of the lyceum, Mrs van der Möhlen, encouraged her pupils to write letters to pupils from a school in lowa, of which she had the address. Several children including Margot apparently did this. Apparently the 10-year-old Anne added a note to the letter of her three year older sister. Who wrote this note for Anne who, as a pupil of the fifth grade of the primary school, did not yet speak English, is not known. It could have been her father Otto Frank or her sister Margot, with or without the help of her teacher. It was also reported the Netherlands State Institute for Documentation on the Second World War (RIOD, Rijksinstituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie, nowadays called NIOD) and the 'Netherlands Research Institute in The Hague'- the translation the American press used for research institute TNO in Delft - would examine the letters. Research by these institutes never took place, according to Dutch historian and former RIOD employee David Barnouw, as the provenance was clear and no further and expensive forensic reseach was needed to prove the authenticity. The research that took place was done by the director of the Anne Frank Foundation, Hans Westra. He compared the letters with other manuscripts written by the sisters Frank. He declared he was for 99% sure the letters were authentic. Also Swann Auction Galleries from New York, since 1941 specialized in rare and antiquarian books, manuscripts and autographs, researched the letters and authenticated them before they went up for bids. the revisionists' non-arguments
Notes and sources on the authentification Revisionists and neo-nazi's however keep on telling that the letters and Anne Frank's diary are forgeries. Their main arguments, the difference in Anne's handwriting in the following years and the adult-looking handwriting in the last part of the diary are non-arguments, however. The handwriting of a child strongly differs through the years. Only after the age of 18 a handwriting more or less stabilizes. Handwriting expert Jaap van den Born: "The fact that the diary actually gives the impression of being written by an adult seems to me to have a very obvious cause: this is someone who was forced into circumstances which made her mature very quickly. And who matured perfectly, which makes the outcome even more poignant." Anne Frank's Pre-diary Iowa Pen Pal Releases Historic Letters. For Auction. Sources on the auction![]() "In an electrically charged bidding session at an auction Tuesday evening, a “private contributor” to the Simon Wiesenthal Center paid $165,000 to acquire the letters that Anne and Margot Frank wrote in English to two sisters in Iowa. (...) The rapid-fire bids on the only letters known to have been written in English by the Frank sisters were placed by Norman Kurlin, chairman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center New Leadership Society. Kurlin, a young man dressed in a collegiate sweater, appeared as a somewhat mysterious bidder and smilingly refrained from identifying himself or the purchaser for several hours, to the consternation of most of the press. Kurlin was accompanied by Rhonda Barad, director of the Eastern region of the Wiesenthal Center. The bidding started at $6,000. The Wiesenthal Center’s final and winning bid was $150,000, the sum which will be paid to the sellers, Betty Ann and Juanita Wagner. (...) Barad said the letters will be placed on display in the entrance lobby of the Wiesenthal Center’s new Beit Hashoah Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, which will open at the end of 1989. Jewish Telegraphic Agency, 27-10-1988. In both American and Dutch media the auction was well covered. As also the international press agencies reported on the sale of the letters, news of this event must have reached the outers corners of planet Earth. The buyer had to pay $ 165,000 - $ 150,000 for the Wagner sisters and $ 15,000 commission to the auction house. Converted to Dutch money, the price was 300,000 guilders. Which is anno 2018, with inflation correction, somewhere around 246,000 euros. Swann Auction Galleries https://www.swanngalleries.com/ Anne Frank-brieven: 3 ton. Het Vrije Volk, 26-10-1988. In 1995 Shelby Myers-Verhage published a very thorough essay on the letters: ' Postmarked from Amsterdam. Anne Frank and her Iowa Pen Pal'in Palimpsest [magazine], published by the State Historical Society of Iowa, winter 1995. Online on www.traces.org/anne.html This was followed in 2003 by a book for children, based on the letters: Searching for Anne Frank. Letters from Amsterdam to Iowa ( Harry N. Abrams, New York) by Susan Goldman Rubin. In the same year Susan Goldman Rubin spoke about her book in Anderson's Bookshop in Naperville Illinois. This was broadcasted on C-Span: In 2012 Hallie Darnall & Haley Villont, two students from Burlington, not far from Danville, published a second children's book: Oceans Apart. The Connection between Anne Frank and Her Small Town Pen Pal. The media storm in 2018
Suddenly, April 2018, news media from all over the world reported on the exhibition in Danville. Some of them suggested the letter from Anne and Margot Frank had only recently been found - quod, obviously non. What had happened? Journalist Michele Herrmann published on April 16 an article on BBC Travel about the correspondence between Juanita Wagner and Anne Frank, and mentioned the exhibition in Danville Station. She made it very clear however that the letters were auctioned in 1988, and only copies are shown in the Danville museum. She wrote also that the originals were kept in Los Angeles. It's this article: Anne Frank's American pen pal. BBC Travel, 16-04-2018. http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20180415-anne-franks-american-pen-pal After reading it the Dutch journalist Sander van Mersbergen sold a Dutch version of Herrmann's article as 'breaking news'. He wrote a sensational article, titled 'Unique letters from Anne Frank surface in an American hamlet', in which he suggested that the letters are only recently discovered. He 'forgot' to mention the events in 1988. His non-news article is published in the AD, one of the major Dutch newspapers. To avoid accusations of plagiarism, he referred with a hyperlink to the BBC-article, as source for a quote from Betty Ann Wagner. Other Dutch news media simply copied his story, and voilá, a media storm with non-news has erupted. In the copies the link to Michele Herrmann's BBC-article was removed, it was now simply 'the BBC cited from an interview', thus removing all clues to the original source.6 ![]() Front page Dagblad van het Noorden, April 23, 2018. Article on page 4. Checking news, not simply copying it, remains a necessity. After receiving remarks from the public about the non-news they were distributing, some newspapers changed the online versions of Van Mersbergen's story, like The Parool. This journal changed the heading, from 'emerged' (duiken op) in 'to be seen' (te zien). Google shows this change, as can be seen on this screenshot, dated April 26, 2018:
In the revised online Parool article at the very end this line was added: "De brieven in de tentoonstelling zijn kopieën van de originelen. De originelen zijn in 1988 geveild en liggen in het Simon Wiesenthal Centrum in Los Angeles." Translated: "The letters in the exhibition are copies of the originals. The originals were auctioned in 1988 and are kept in the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles" The question remains how many of the readers of van Mersbergen's original article are aware of this 'slight' adjustment of the text. Sander van Mersbergen did alas not react on my request to ask him some questions regarding his article. Bart FM Droog, April 25/26, 2018. note 6 Sander van Mersbergen.
